Question for fellow Aussie tech hobbyists: How do you handle GST when buying or importing

Hi everyone,

I have recently been buying and restoring older computer gear — sometimes locally, sometimes from overseas. One thing I’ve run into is the confusing way GST and import costs stack up, especially when buying from places like eBay or specialty shops overseas.

Do most of you budget for GST and duties upfront when importing hardware? Or do you just accept the surprise fees when they come?

I’m curious how others here handle this — especially if you’re importing or even reselling gear occasionally.

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts!

Personally eBay is upfront on fees when buying from overseas.

If I am buying for resale, the GST component does not matter as I am registered for GST. The GST on the purchase is offset on the GST acceptance.

Import and GST will apply for any amount from places like eBay, but when you are generally buying from overseas, GST and import duties will only apply on a total amount that lands in Australia valued at $1000AUD including goods and shipping fees.

Thanks, that’s really helpful to know — especially about eBay being upfront and the $1000AUD threshold, which I think a lot of people overlook.

I was trying to wrap my head around how much GST I’d actually be up for when buying from overseas, and I stumbled on this GST calculator online. It lets you plug in either GST-inclusive or exclusive prices and works off the Aussie rate, so it gave me a clearer idea of how much tax was baked into the total. Made it a bit easier to budget things out without surprises.
