Australian Bulletin Board Systems - BBS

Oh my god, do you have any idea how important your BBS was to me growing up?
There was a period I was on Necropolis BBS daily, playing LORD and chatting to you. For a while i thought i misremembered the name as i could never find information about it, and no-one i talk to now either used a BBS or remembers Necropolis. So, i am so thankful to see that my memory was correct, and i just want you to know the joy i got from dialing in daily, tying up your line at times as i would keep reconnecting to chat with you, and my failed attempts at marrying that barmaid in LORD.

No way! - You made my day! Thank you! It was a very small BBS in the scheme of things, so I’m astounded someone remembers it. You weren’t the guy who made the effort to come and meet me were you? I do remember LORD was by far the most popular door game (I was also a fan). … I’m sure someone still has it running somewhere.

I can’t tell you how pleased I am that someone (other than myself) got some joy out of it and remembers it! It was a very formative period in my life too. I do remember some regular ā€˜pagers’ although the names have long gone. It was always fun to chat, but challenging sometimes as I was shift-working and supposedly studying. Sometimes on a quiet night, I can still hear modems handshaking. haha!

Hi @cefair ,

I must say your memory is astounding and it sounds like you had quite a sophisticated setup, that evolved well over the years. Mention of things like TheDraw and VirtualSysop brought me a flood of memories. I haven’t thought about this stuff in so long…

NB: I might be an old acquaintance from some old forums, clubs and Wednesday night meetups at The Public Bar in the late 2000s. I never realized you were a retired sysop and of a pretty major local BBS to boot.

Cheers and thanks for the dedication and helping to make the scene memorable.

I swear that when I was going through stuff recently that I found some ANSI art on a CD from Necropolis in a backup of my brothers. Will keep an eye out

It would be a blast to see some of the old screens again. But I’m sure they’d be a tad underwhelming. Most of my screens were minimalist. Aside from a couple of screens (mostly lifted cough borrowed) I aimed for fast loading over ā€œglorious, but I used up my session just getting the first screenā€. All these old memories churning up - I did invest a bit of time creating some RIP (Remote Imaging Protocol) menus, but I don’t remember them being particularly good … I think that was a fairly short lived protocol - hard to compete with HTML. But it was a lot of fun.
